NewsGuard

NewsGuard is a tool to help you assess the reliability of online news and information.

A team of trained journalists evaluates thousands of news and information websites based on basic, unbiased journalistic standards. They write Nutrition Label reviews that explain the ratings for each site. These Nutrition Labels provide information about the site’s ownership, funding sources, editorial practices, and history.

NewsGuard is installed as a browser extension and works within an internet browser as you search for news and information online. The rating process is applied accurately to all sites, regardless of the site’s topic, tone, or political leaning if any, and is reviewed and fact-checked by experienced editors. Each site receives a 0-100 trust score and reliability rating, periodically updated, based on nine journalistic criteria.

Using the NewsGuard extension

NewsGuard icons appear in the top right corner of websites rated by NewsGuard. Icons also appear in search results and social media feeds, next to links. Hover over the icon to see how the site is rated, then click to read the full Nutrition Label.
