Launch of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC)
The European Open Science Cloud Portal was launched on 23 November 2018. The new EOSC Portal facilitates discovery of data and resources; processing and analysis; research data management; computation; storage; networking; training and security. To mark the launch of the EOSC Portal, the European Commission issued two supporting documents: Prompting EOSC in Practice which explains the governance of the new ecosystem, and; Turning FAIR into Reality which provides an overview of requirements to fulfill the goal of making research data ‘Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.’ EOSC has six components…
(i) an architecture to address fragmentation by federating existing infrastructures (ii) the enhancement of data management tools to make research data FAIR: findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable (iii) services to meet user needs (iv) interfaces and mechanisms to access EOSC (v) rules of participation for scientists and administrators (vi) governance of EOSC – consisting of a Governance Board, an Executive Board and Stakeholders Forum.
The EOSC Portal links to information about policies, resources and services; and also functions as a ‘marketplace’ providing information about providers who meet the quality standards of EOSC. The 2018-2020 implementation timetable is at this link. The detailed EOSC Roadmap is available here (PDF). A short video about EOSC and the EOSC Portal is available here.
